This house was a two bedroom mid-terrace house in Gosport and home to a family of five. There was an evident shortage of living space, and the owners did not wish to move. The ideal solution was to build up, with a loft conversion. However, no other houses in this or adjacent streets had been granted approval for a front dormer and obtaining Planning Permission for conversion work threatened to be challenging.

Brief

The intention was to create a loft extension with rear and front dormer windows, providing space for additional bedrooms in what had been the loft.

Solution

  • Planning Permission was granted for a front dormer window in addition to one in the rear. An initial concern from the council concerning the provision of parking was removed after the submission of a Planning Statement based on existing occupation.

  • The loft conversion provided two bedrooms with a central staircase, meaning that all three children had their own bedroom space.

  • An additional window was added to the existing landing on the first floor to provide more natural light.

Outcome

The loft conversion meant a family was able to remain in their home with increased living space and bedrooms for each of the three children. The granting of Planning Permission for a front dormer window when none had been permitted before enabled the project to go ahead as planned.
